Whitley Apartments
This 24-unit housing complex in the historic Whitley Heights neighborhood takes advantage of the Transit Oriented Housing Communities Affordable Housing Incentives which had recently been implemented in the City of Los Angeles. The building stands at 5 stories tall, much denser than the adjacent neighborhood, with a roof deck that overlooks the entire City and up into the Hollywood Hills.
An open air corridor on the north facade provides cross ventilation through each unit and natural lighting throughout the day. The folding facade along Whitley Ave creates a strong rhythm and floor to ceiling views to the north and south. The smooth white plaster was inspired by the adjacent properties in the historic district, but with small moments of color and folding walls on the north and south which mimic the patterning of the front facade while providing small Juliet balconies for each unit.
