Silver Lake Duplex ADU
Seeking to work with the existing topography of the site, the house ‘spirals’ upwards in section around a central column: each room of this very small house becomes its own platform — sheared vertically from its adjacent space. While the plan is open, the sectional shifts articulate specific spaces in addition to providing impromptu seating and storage. As you get to the top, the house reconnects with the existing house via a small bridge which spans over a new pool.
Because the existing house looks down upon its new duplex, the roof needed to take an aesthetic stand. We unified wall and roof to make a sort of ‘helmet’ which fits loosely upon the foundation of the house. The gaps between helmet and earthwork become windows which open to the neighborhood beyond.
